Turbulence Investigation in a Combustion Chamber

This project analyzed the inner flow regime of a combustion chamber during gas exchange with moving parts. A transient 3D-CFD model was developed, starting with RANS and later extended to LES, and successfully validated against PIV experiments. The research team gained valuable insights and was trained to adapt the model for future studies.

Surrogate Modelling & AI Design Exploration

To speed up internal flow design, we introduced AI-based surrogate modelling. Parametrization and DoE methods cut required CFD runs from 500 to 50, all automated on a high-performance cluster. The surrogate model reached over 99% accuracy, delivering results 120× faster and enabling AI to autonomously identify optimal designs.

Fossil-to-Hydrogen Retrofit Engine

A conventional 6-cylinder engine was converted into a hydrogen-powered prototype with zero emissions. Without CAD data, the engine was 3D-scanned and reverse engineered. We designed new H₂ components, ran GT-Power and 3D-CFD simulations, and redesigned the charging system. Within one year, a performance-ready H₂ICE prototype was built and validated on the test bench.
